I started at Miracles In Fitness in September of 2005. I began my personalized nutrition program in January of 2006, and as of September of 2006, I have lost over 30 pounds. In addition, two of my co-workers saw the results and have also joined. I had tried numerous weight loss programs and gyms in the past, with limited or short-term success.
I am turning the "Big 40" soon, and wanted a new, permanent me. JoAnne at Miracles In Fitness gave me my body back! She worked me hard, called me to keep me going, and gave me a place to work out where I felt comfortable. The program consisted of two days of personal training a week, plus two more days of cardiovascular workouts. The results are astonishing. I would recommend it to anyone!

Three years ago on Halloween, Mardi Mauney saw an article in The Bourne Enterprise about Miracles In Fitness. She had been a walker forever, but had reached a point in life where she realized that, though walking was good, it was doing nothing to help her with flexibility or basic strength training. She had recently been tossing around the idea of joining the gym, but was afraid of hurting herself by not knowing what she was doing. Once she heard about Miracles In Fitness, she knew her search was over.
"I live really close by, so I knew I could just bike over. Jo started working one-on-one with me. I had just had knee surgery, and had been declared 'recovered'. I didn't feel very recovered though. In January of the following year, less than three months after I started with Jo, I was standing in line at the Los Angeles airport and, in a dramatic moment of realization, I noticed that I was standing by myself on two feet. The muscles required to hold up my knees were now strong enough to support my weight. I knew my flexibility, cardio, and strength were improving too, but those changes were more subtle. It was more like, if I had fallen, I knew I'd be able to catch myself now.
The thing is, you never know the resources you have until you need to use them. That is true in theory, but for me, it became a huge reality when I was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 16, 2009. When is it ever not a complete shock, of course - but for me, it truly was. I had been training just for general fitness, not to be able to run a marathon -- but now suddenly I was faced with this marathon of an illness that would take every bit of stamina and reserve I could muster to fight.
The diagnostics took forever, and the treatments were scary and painful like everybody hears about. I had a total mastectomy, and the doctors said to expect at least two nights in the hospital. They were SHOCKED when I was able to take my oxygen off that very same afternoon!! I was able to move and walk around. I'm 100% sure it was because I was in good shape. Every nurse and doctor that came in to see me asked, 'How did you do that?!' When Jo came to visit me in the hospital, I was able to say, 'Here's my personal trainer, and she's a big reason why I was able to do that!"
Now, here's the big news -- THEY LET ME GO THE NEXT DAY!!! The people at Jordan Hospital are spectacular. I had the most amazing team you could get. I didn't feel like I had to go to Boston - I could get great care close to home, especially now with the new breast cancer center at Jordan. But I certainly brought a lot to the table myself, being in good shape.
One of the worst things about any illness is giving up your self-image of being a healthy person. I constantly have to tell myself I'm a healthy person with an illness - I'm not an illness. I'm not quite there yet, but with Jo and the big guns in the medical field, I know I'll get all the way there. I have to mention my physical therapist, Nancy Gage, who works with the Jordan team over in Cordage Park. Because my surgery was so extensive, I've had to work a lot to get full range of motion back in my shoulder. Nancy works closely with Jo. She knew I wanted to start working out again as soon as possible, so she sent Jo a letter saying what I could and couldn't do.
Aside from liking and respecting Jo, I would definitely be using a personal trainer right now because I need to know I'm doing it right. I'm 65 now, so I can't afford to be completely reckless anymore. I can't tear myself up on the workout equipment. Jo pushes me as far as I can go, and then a little further -- but she backs off when she needs to. She also provides the discipline factor - if I just went to the gym, I'd find any excuse to let myself skip a session. "It's raining out." "I have to get dinner ready." But with her, I've made a formal contract, and I've committed to show up for my appointment, so I make sure to go. You may not know what you're training for right now. You may think you just want to get in shape or get stronger. But you never know what curveball life may throw at you -- and when it does, will you be prepared?? A strong body can help you rise to meet life's challenges and crises, rather than being forced to retreat from them."

I've been going to Planet Fitness in Plymouth for about three years now, doing strength and cardio training on my own. I had never worked with a trainer before and began to realize I wasn't as disciplined, intense, or consistent as I probably should be.
For one reason or another I stopped going to the gym in July, 2009. It sounded like a good idea to just take the summer off. By the time I was ready to get back into a routine, I knew I needed to do something different or I would probably lose interest. A while back, my friend Jack Tonello mentioned JoAnne Papi and Miracles In Fitness , and strongly recommended her and her staff. This sounded like what I thought I needed, so I figured I would give it a shot.
I consider myself to be a reasonably fit person, but by the end of the initial free session you get, I began to wonder what I had gotten myself into! After a brief recovery period, it became clear that this was exactly what I was looking for, and I was excited for my next workout. I am also a fairly competitive person in most things I do. I found the challenge that each of the three rigorous rounds of circuit training in a 30-minute workout presents is unsurpassed.
I started with a two-day-a-week regimen - Tuesdays with JoAnne and Thursdays with John. Within the first four sessions I began to feel my strength and stamina increase. I could see and feel definitive results in just a short period of time. It's a great feeling to see your hard work pay off with such positive results. I can honestly say I truly look forward to my Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Miracles In Fitness .
I continue to go the gym on two or three other mornings to get my cardio workouts in on my own. I actually find myself pushing a little harder when I am there because of the intense routines and work ethic that I am learning with JoAnne.
The best part of the workouts at Miracles In Fitness is how widely varied each of the sessions are. I didn't want to get back into a rut of doing the same exercises over and over again. Based solely on the variety of exercises, there is no chance of having your program "plateau", which would reduce results and (more importantly in my case) my interest. It's funny, JoAnne often tells me she dreams of new exercises to try, and I can honestly say I love being a guinea pig!
You'll be asked before you start what your goals are. I had mentioned to JoAnne that I wanted to try a few Duathalon events this year. I had done a couple with my youngest sister a couple years ago and wanted to get back to that. It feels at though I am on a good path in preparing to do that.
The staff never pushes you harder than you should go, but always as hard as you can go. JoAnne knows just how to get the most from you. She'll challenge you to do your best, and beyond. It's the little extra push she gets from you that you would not do on your own that makes all the difference. Just when you think you have nothing left, she'll say or do something that will push you to continue. I laugh sometimes and tell her she's a cruel person, but I wouldn't want it any other way! A smile of satisfaction comes across her face, if only for a moment, and then it's right back to work. "What are you doing taking a break?" she'll say. "Let's go!"
If you are at all serious about getting yourself in shape for any reason, I would unequivocally recommend Miracles In Fitness. It is more and more difficult to get your money's worth these days, but if you decide to give JoAnne a try, you will get that and then some."
